This summer, our chapter is once again offering this training in a two day, 9 hour course taught by local botanist and naturalist skills instructor Jazmen Yoder! The course is designed for novices, and is intended to give a foundation that enables students to continue independently building their identification skills after course completion. The course will be taught mostly or entirely outdoors.


Things you will learn
- Intro to botany basics. Comparison of major plant groups including flowering plants, gymnosperms, ferns, and mosses.
- Flower anatomy and vocabulary
- Taxonomy basics
- Identification of common families of flowering plants
- Practice with dichotomous keys
- Practice with field manuals by authors Pojar & MacKinnon, and Hitchcock & Cronquist
- Navigate the terminology used in field manuals
When, Where, and Fee
- Date and time: Sunday July 6 and Sunday July 13 1:00-5:30pm
- Location: Bellingham, specific location to be determined
- Fee: $70, or you may choose a $30 “budget” option. Note that $70 is roughly half the price of similar courses offered by local colleges!
About Your Instructor
Jazmen is the founder and chief instructor of naturalist skills and outdoor education company Northwest Natura. She was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest and is passionate about its natural heritage. She is a botanist and former professional wetland ecologist with 8 years of formal education. Jazmen has been a Bellingham resident and WNPS member for many years and is known and loved by many of us.
How to Apply
The course has just filled up! However there is a short waiting list. Contact Eric as below to get on the waiting list.
Please only apply if you can attend both sessions for the entire class time. To apply, simply indicate your desire to enroll by emailing Eric Worden at komakulshan@wnps.org. Please indicate whether you would pay the regular or budget fee, as there is a limited number of budget fee positions available. A maximum of 15 total students will be accepted, in the order that email are received. If the course fills up, a waiting list will be started.
Payment
Please pay promptly after sending your email application. If there is a waiting list and payment has not been received within seven days of your application, a waiting application will take your place and your application will be moved to the waiting list.

Cancellation and Refunds
You may cancel your application and receive a refund if you notify Eric by email on June 29 or earlier. The amount of the refund will be equal to your payment amount less $10.
If you cancel on June 30 or later, you will not receive a refund.
